Glossary of Terms

Christian:

A “Christian” is someone who personally embraces the example and provision of Jesus the Christ (messiah, saviour) as portrayed in the New Testament gospels. By faith, believers appropriate the biblical narrative of Jesus provision for personal redemption. John 3:1-21. Starting new, a Christ follower recognizes change, professes belief in Jesus, studies His teaching and by the power of His Holy Spirit desires to live out new life in relationship with God. John 14:26, 1Cor.2:11-12, Acts 1:8 Other uses of the term “Christian” such as an identity for groups sharing a political persuasion or cultural background are outside the parameters of this definition.

Church:

The Church is defined as the worldwide corporate identity of people, present and past, which are Christians as defined above. The church does not require a building, or an institutional organization, or external nameplate to exist.  The church exists as people whose heart posture is reverence and joy for what God has done.  Like a scarlet thread throughout a historical tapestry, the Church understood as the Body of Christ is a continuous living response to the love of God given unconditionally to whoever will accept His payment (ransom) for man’s separation (sin) from his Creator.

Evangelism:

Evangelism is the action of sharing the content of the gospels and the New Testament with others as directed by Jesus in Matthew 28. We believe Jesus was the greatest example of servanthood and sacrifice in history.  missions 3D threshold seeks to hold high the biblical narrative of Jesus’ example by humbly serving others as He did and share God’s unearned gift of new life in Christ and eternity. Perspectives of judgement, discrimination or manipulation in the name of evangelism fall outside the parameters of this definition.

The Good News:

The Good News, the Gospel, is the coming of the Kingdom of God, Jesus death on the cross and resurrection to restore people’s relationship with God.  (Mark 1:14-15) The Good News includes the descent of the Holy Spirit upon believers and the second coming of Jesus.

Works:

Works are personal acts of love and service motivated by a Christian’s faith and gratitude.  In no way are works to be understood as earning merit towards salvation, but instead an outflow of the life of Christ in an individual.   Ephesians 2:8-10
